Old-Fashioned Butcher Shop With New Traditions

The Butcher Shop isn’t an “order and next!” kind of place; we care about bringing back the true traditions and art of the industry. We learn the names and faces of our customers and tailor their needs. Our services even go beyond our store. The Butcher Shop will go anywhere for any customer. We cater private and corporate events and perform educational demonstrations to both customers and chefs. Our non-traditional methods of service, combined with our traditional quality of product, is why we’re truly an artisanal butcher shop.

Our Story

The Butcher Shop was founded in 2010 by Anthony Nuckolls. In 2016, Tony met Matthew Barnett and they immediately became good friends. While there was a 50-year age gap between them, their personalities and values aligned.

Tony decided to sell the store, but while he had several interested buyers, Tony wanted the shop to be in the hands of someone who would treat it well and continue what he started. Matthew didn’t have the means, but he had the heart, guts, and passion, which far outweighed the rest. Matthew’s personal history in the meat industry started back in Bakersfield, CA at his family’s grocery store, The Green Frog Market, which his grandfather started in 1934, but unfortunately, the store closed after over 75 years of business. Matthew then worked at other grocery stores and some big-box competitors. He owes those opportunities for the knowledge he has now that he uses to drive The Butcher Shop’s success.

In mid-2016, Matthew purchased the business with what little money he had and his entrepreneurial spirit. At first, the store couldn’t afford to fill the entire 24-feet meat case. The store was going to have to turn a profit in the first month or two if it was ever going to make it. A few months later, the meat case and shelves were filled with some of the best products around.

In 2018, Matthew rebranded the shop as The Butcher Shop, where a team of dedicated, passionate, and highly skilled individuals create new ways to compete in the market. The Butcher Shop stands as a foundation for lasting and meaningful relationships with clients and the community.
